People fear what they don't understand and hate what they can't conquer.-Andrew Smith
What man does not understand, he fears; and what he fears, he tends to destroy.
-William Butler Yeats
Throughout the years, there have been countless tales told of demons, vampires and supernatural creatures. Creatures shrouded in legend, draped in the misconceptions of man. The race of Homo Sapiens outright denied the existence of such creatures come the technological age, passing them off as merely superstitions and mythology. For the most part, this seemed to hold true until a small incident occurred in the midst of the New York City bustle.
A strange pale man covered in rags jumped one of the civilians, ripping the women limb from limb, as monstrous features began to ripple across the man's face, a long tongue lapping out at the woman's body. The creature, aptly named Chiroptera, was brought down by the local SWAT team after much effort and numerous more fatalities. This incident had brought the press bearing down upon these "supernatural" creatures, as TVs across the world showed the carnage live, striking fear into the hearts and minds of the Homo Sapien race.
Though there were few incidents similar to the Chiroptera feeding else, they too were blown out of proportion, as humans began sending selfshot footage into local news stations, showing various supernatural phenomenon. Such footage included men becoming beasts upon the full moon, local carnies wielding uncanny abilities, demonic creatures ravaging livestock, and strange pale men biting into the neck of local humans while the rest of the crowds around remained nonchalant towards the matter. As these incidents became public knowledge, mass hysteria soon followed.
After a year of continued backing, new legislation passed through the UK, an international treaty backed by millions, confirming the right to hunt these "supernatural" beings. Thus so began the massacre that seemed too familiar. Due to public fear, numerous countries signed the treaty and in turn, any individuals who were rumored to be one of these "beings" were brought into questioning. They would soon find themselves serving a death sentence, paying for the irrational fear placed upon them by their fellow peers.
The members of these supernatural races scowled at the drastic measures taken upon them through the Sapien's cruelty. But they had recognized it long before as various groups began to introduce themselves and make themselves known, some openly declaring war, others watching from the sidelines, all disgusted with the New World Legislation Act.
Empuse, those who had lived for nearly as long as the humans had, feeding upon them for sustenance, even long after they had died. They were the vampires, immortal creatures of the night.
The Feye, the true demons spoken of in the Old Testament as well as numerous documents predating the origin of humanity. Yet even they were overestimated as malevolent beings.
The Therion, most well known of them being lycanthropes, the bestial shapeshifters who had taken to hunting livestock to replace their old diet of human flesh to preserve their dwindling numbers.
The Eidolon, least known of the groups, serving as spirits and vessels to the dream world. They often watch the scenarios unfold as they glance towards the rising chaos drifting between this world and the next, occasionally building up enough energy to make themselves known.
And lastly, the newly formed Sigma, once from the race of Sapiens themselves. They had been born or genetically modified from the human template, possessing new abilities. Originally built as weapons against the other species, Sigma soon found themselves targeted by their own creators and destroyed if their abilities were found out.
What man does not understand, he fears; and what he fears, he tends to destroy.
-William Butler Yeats
